Cheatsheet 1#: Do I need a Housekeeper OR a Professional Organiser?

1. Do I need a Housekeeper or a Professional Organiser?

It is pretty straightforward to know whether you need a housekeeper or a professional organiser to help in your home, once you understand the difference between the two roles.

Housekeeping and professional organising are very different services. However, a lot of people confuse them, mainly due to a lack of understanding!

If your home is untidy most of the time, how do you know whether you need a housekeeper or a professional organiser? It’s easy to know (with a bit of honesty)…

2. What does a professional organiser do?

A Professional Organiser will create systems or clutter-free spaces in the home (they remove clutter and create order)

They will create systems and clutter-free spaces by working with you. An organiser will work room-by-room with you to tidy up and declutter.

Professional Organisers are specialists at what they do. This means they will reduce clutter, create systems that are easy to follow, and will ideally ensure that any systems are easy for you to follow and maintain.

Housekeeper or a professional organiser? Which is best?

3. What does a housekeeper do?

A Housekeeper will maintain systems or spaces in the home (i.e. putting items back where they belong…spaces where they fit easily). Their main duties are cleaning, laundry, and tidying up.

When a housekeeper tidies, they are usually putting items back where they belong – they are NOT decluttering.

4. A Housekeeper is not a cheap Professional Organiser

Once you know the difference, it is easy to see whether you need a housekeeper or a professional organiser.

  1. If your house is messy but everything has a specific home, you are ready for a housekeeper.
  2. If you have mess and nothing really has a home (where it fits) then you are best to get a professional organiser.

A housekeeper may be able to tidy up your home, but they will not really tackle clutter. This means the house might seem tidy initially, but it will get messy very quickly. That is why a professional organiser will be a better long term solution.

Additionally, we know that housekeepers do not perform well around clutter. They work slower, less effectively, and often lose motivation quickly in houses that are extremely untidy.

This is a recent example of a home that a client wanted a housekeeper to work in:

Messy House A Housekeeper Cannot Tidy
This is NOT suitable for a housekeeper. It is too cluttered.

If your home is cluttered and disorganised, it is important that you consider having help from a professional organiser before having a housekeeper come through your home… A professional organiser can help you to create systems of order, remove clutter, recommend storage solutions, and help pave the way for a housekeeper to work effectively in your home.

Your housekeeper will be ready to clean, tidy, do laundry, and put away washing once your house is sorted out. Even if only the core rooms in your home are organised first, we know that improves the work of your housekeeper immensely. Ready for a Housekeeper? Book Now.
